You figured out the secret sauce of mountain fitness: Aerobic capacity (woohoo!).
You make your plan and keep it simple:
"Alright, I will log 20 kms per week, easy effort, and progress by 10% each week" (Perfect!)
But how do you know your aerobic capacity is actually improving? What you consider easy and adaptable may not be so. Your instinct to push the pace might kick in and you could be training harder than needed resulting in burnout or injury!
Here are 4 signs that your aerobic workouts are actually working in your favor:
1. You recover overnight : You’re able to do the same or similar workout again, day after day, without feeling wrecked.
2. You can hold a conversation : Your breathing stays under control, and you’re not gasping for air while moving.
3. You’re breathing through your nose : If you’re not constantly opening your mouth for more air, that’s a great sign of aerobic efficiency.
4. You look forward to your next session : Mentally, you’re not dreading the next workout. Instead, it feels great and you look forward to it.
If you’re in this place, you’re on the right track. If not, it might be time to rethink your effort and approach.
