Rock Climbing Weekend (Badami)
Karnataka
Trip Highlights
Real rock from the first morning. No climbing walls, no simulations. You spend both days on Badami’s red sandstone, a short walk from where you stay.
The foundations, done properly. Knots, harness, belaying and climbing calls: the skills every climber builds on, taught hands-on by our instructors.
Your first top-rope climbs. Start on easy routes and work your way up as your confidence grows, with a rope and a trained belayer behind every move.
Learn how to move, not just how to pull. Footwork, balance and reading the rock, the things that make climbing feel less like effort and more like flow.
A weekend at the climbing house. A shared house near the crag, home-cooked meals from our cooks, and evenings with people who spent the day doing the same thing you did.
A taste of the full course. If the weekend hooks you, the 8-day course takes you all the way to anchors, lead climbing and a top-rope certification.

Two days. One crag. And a very good chance you’ll leave wanting more.

The Rock Climbing Weekend is our introduction to climbing in Badami, built for people who are curious about climbing but can’t take eight days off, or who want to try it before committing to the full course.

You arrive on Saturday morning at our climbing house, a short walk from Badami’s red sandstone cliffs, set among the town’s ancient cave temples. By lunchtime, you’ll have learned your knots, put on a harness and made your first climb on real rock. By Sunday, you’ll be belaying your partners, reading routes and moving with a confidence you didn’t have when you arrived.

It’s not a compressed version of the 8-day course. It’s a proper introduction: the fundamentals, done carefully, with enough time on the rock to find out how much you enjoy it.

No experience needed. Just come curious.

Weekends don’t work for you?

Climb with us on any two or three weekdays instead, or add a day or two to your weekend. Talk to us, and we’ll make it happen.

Want to work and climb?

The climbing house has Wi-Fi, so you can work remotely in the mornings and climb in the afternoons. Stay as long as the season allows. Talk to us, and we’ll plan it around your schedule.

Day 1 Arrival and First Climbs

Arrive at the Badami house by 8 am. After introductions, we walk to the crag for a safety briefing and the basics: tying in with a figure-8 knot, fitting your harness and helmet, and belaying your partner.

Then you’re on the rock, climbing your first top-rope routes on easier grades and getting a feel for how the rope, the rock and your feet work together. We head back to the house for dinner and an evening with the group.

Day 2 Building Confidence

After a warm-up and a belay refresher, we spend the day on progressively harder routes. You’ll work on footwork, balance and reading the rock, with instructors coaching you through each climb. We wrap up with a debrief on what you’ve learned and where to go next, before you head home in the evening.

Return travel: Plan to leave Badami on Sunday evening. Buses and trains to Bangalore and other cities usually depart in the evening.

Who this is for

No climbing experience is needed. This weekend is built for complete beginners and for anyone who wants to try climbing before committing to the full course.

Fitness

You don’t need to be strong to start climbing; technique matters more than muscle. A regular fitness routine with some aerobic, strength and mobility work will help you enjoy both days more.

Our expectations

  • Listen to your instructors and follow safety calls at all times
  • Look out for your climbing partners
  • Tell us about any medical conditions or injuries before you sign up
  • Come curious and open to trying

Do I need any climbing experience?

No. The weekend is built for complete beginners. We start from the very basics.

I’m afraid of heights. Can I still join?

Yes. Every safety precaution is in place, and you start on the easiest routes, building up at your own pace. Most people find the fear fades faster than they expect once they learn to trust the rope, the belayer and their own feet. No one is pushed beyond what they’re ready for.

What’s the difference between the weekend and the 8-day course?

The weekend is an introduction: knots, belaying, your first top-rope climbs and the basics of movement. The 8-day course goes much further, with harder top-rope routes, a bouldering day, anchors, rappelling, a taste of lead climbing, and an Odyssey top-rope certification at the end.

Will I get a certificate?

The weekend doesn’t include a certification. If you want one, the 8-day course ends with a final assessment and an Odyssey top-rope certification.

What gear do I need?

A harness, a helmet and climbing shoes. If you don’t have your own, we arrange rentals for you in Badami, and you pay the rental directly. We provide ropes, belay devices, and quickdraws.

How do I reach Badami?

Badami has its own railway station, with trains and buses from Bangalore. Plan to arrive at the house by 8 am on Saturday. Most people take an overnight bus or train on Friday.

What happens on a rainy day?

In recent years, Badami hasn’t lost a December day to rain. If it does rain, we switch to indoor sessions on knots, gear and technique.

What’s the house like?

It’s a regular house with basic facilities: mattresses and blankets, hot water, Wi-Fi, and a kitchen run by our team, with separate rooms for men and women.

What is the cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is on the website: https://outonodyssey.com/policy/odyssey-cancellation-policy

Can I come on weekdays instead of the weekend?

Yes. If weekends don’t suit you, you can join us for two or three weekdays. You can also extend your weekend by a day or two if you want more time on the rock. Talk to us, and we’ll make it happen.

Can I work remotely while I’m there?

Yes. The house has Wi-Fi, so you can work in the mornings and climb in the afternoons. It’s a good way to spend a week or more in Badami without taking leave. Talk to us, and we’ll plan your days around your work.
