Navigation 101
Uttarakhand
Trip Highlights
Learn to read the land, not just follow trails: Understand contours, ridges, valleys, and terrain cues that keep you oriented even when the trail disappears.
Map & compass mastery: Build real confidence using a topographic map and compass, the most reliable navigation tools in the mountains.
Hands-on, field-based learning: No classrooms. You learn by navigating real terrain, making real decisions, and correcting them in real time.
Orienteering course experience: Apply everything you learn on a short navigation loop where you choose the route and stay found on your own.
Build judgement and calm under uncertainty: Learn how to stay composed, reassess, and make good decisions when things stop being obvious.
A foundation for backpacking & independent travel: Perfect for anyone who wants to move beyond guided treks and start travelling self-sufficiently.

There’s a special kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly where you are in the wild,  not because a guide told you, not because a blue dot is moving on your phone, but because you can read the land beneath your feet.

Most hikers don’t realise how quickly things can change out there.

A fresh layer of snow.

A trail that fades into a meadow.

A ridge that splits into three.

One wrong turn and suddenly nothing around you looks familiar.

That’s the moment you understand something simple:

You never want to depend on luck or someone else to get you home.

Navigation isn’t just a skill.

It’s freedom.

It’s awareness.

It’s the difference between being taken on a trek and truly travelling through the outdoors.

Navigation 101 is where you learn that difference, how to read a map, use a compass, interpret terrain, and trust yourself even when the trail disappears, and the mountains stop giving you straightforward answers.

Why We’re Running This Course

Most trekking in India is “follow the crowd.”

Someone else knows the route. You walk.

But absolute outdoor confidence comes from self-sufficiency:

Knowing how to read the terrain, understand direction, make calls, and stay calm when things stop looking obvious.

Navigation is the foundation of that confidence.

Whether you want to backpack, explore independently, or just understand the mountains better, this is where it begins.

This course brings those skills to people who want more than a packaged trek.

Do I need prior navigation experience to join?

No. This course is designed for beginners and early-stage trekkers. We start from the basics and build up gradually through hands-on practice.

Is this a classroom course or an outdoor one?

This is a completely outdoor, field-based course. You’ll learn by walking, navigating real terrain, reading maps on the trail, and making decisions in real time.

Will we use phones or GPS apps?

We’ll discuss GPS and GPX files, but the focus is on map and compass navigation. Phones are treated as reference tools, not primary navigation devices.

What kind of terrain will we be navigating?

You’ll move through forest trails, ridges, and open terrain around Dehradun and Mussoorie. The terrain is chosen specifically to make navigation meaningful without being risky.

Is it safe to “get lost” during the course?

Yes. All navigation exercises are controlled and supervised. You’ll be learning independently, but never alone or unsupported.

What should I carry?

We’ll share a detailed packing list before the course. You’ll need basic winter clothing, good trekking shoes, a daypack, and personal essentials. Navigation tools are provided.

Is this course suitable for someone preparing for backpacking or longer treks?

Absolutely. Navigation 101 is a foundational course for backpacking, alpine travel, and independent trekking.
