The Unknown Trail: A New Year Surprise Trek
Uttarakhand
Trip Highlights
A trek you can’t google. No reviews, no reels, no photos to compare it to. You’ll meet this place the way people used to meet mountains: for the first time, with your own eyes.
New Year without a screen. No countdowns on your phone, no stories to post. You see out the year under a sky full of stars and wake up to the first sunrise of the new one, high in the Himalayas.
Five days of being fully present. Phones go away when the trek begins. What’s left is the trail, the people around you, and a kind of attention most of us haven’t felt in years.
Hand over the planning. No itineraries to check, no decisions to make. We’ve chosen a place worth discovering. All you have to do is show up and walk.
A story only your group will share. You’ll start as strangers who don’t know where they’re going and finish as a team who found out together.
A fully supported winter trek. Our team handles camp, meals and safety, so your energy goes into the trail and the moment you’re in.

Every year ends the same way. A countdown on a screen, a flood of messages, a feed full of other people’s New Years.

Let this one end differently.

The Unknown Trail is a six-day winter trek in the Himalayas with two simple rules: you won’t know where you’re going until we get there, and once the trek begins, you leave your phone behind.

We know how that sounds. But think about the last time you went somewhere new without seeing it on a screen first. The photos, the reviews, the “top 10 things to do”: by the time most of us arrive anywhere, we’ve already seen it. The surprise takes that away. You’ll arrive with no expectations and see the place for what it is, not for what the internet said it would be.

And the phone? It’s the same idea. Five days without notifications, without checking, without capturing every moment instead of living it. Just the trail, the cold air, the people around you, and the mountains doing what they’ve always done.

You’ll spend New Year’s Eve at a high camp, under more stars than you’ve seen in years, and greet the year's first sunrise from the trek's highest point.

At Odyssey, we believe humans are wired to engage with life, and the outdoors brings us closer to that. This trek is that belief in its purest form.

What we’ll tell you: how hard it is, how high it goes, how cold it gets and exactly what to bring.

What we won’t: the name.

Your family stays in the loop. While you’re off the grid, they won’t be. Our base camp manager stays in touch with the team every day over walkie-talkies and sends your families a daily update on how the group is doing. If anyone needs to send you a message, it reaches you on the trail.

Day 1 (Tue, Dec 29) Into the Mountains

We leave Dehradun in the morning and drive deep into the mountains to a small village at the trail's start. You’ll meet your team over dinner at a local homestay. That evening, they reveal the destination, and you put your phones away for the rest of the trek.

Day 2 (Wed, Dec 30) First Steps

The trail begins. A steady climb takes us out of the village and into the wild, gaining a few thousand feet over the day. We reach our first camp in the afternoon, settle in, and get used to a day without a screen.

Day 3 (Thu, Dec 31) Going Deeper

A shorter day that takes us higher and further from everything familiar. We reach camp early, with the afternoon to rest and explore. That night, we see out the year together: a warm dinner, cold air and a sky full of stars.

Day 4 (Fri, Jan 1) The High Point

An early start in the dark, climbing to the highest point of the trek, above 12,000 ft, in time for the first sunrise of the year. After time at the top, we descend back to camp. The longest day of the trek, and the one you’ll remember.

Day 5 (Sat, Jan 2) The Way Back

A gentle descent back to the village where we started. Phones come back to you here. We spend the evening at the homestay, look back on the trek together and sit down to a final dinner.

Day 6 (Sun, Jan 3) Return to Dehradun

We drive back to Dehradun and arrive by mid-afternoon.

Return travel: Book flights after 6 pm, or take an evening bus or train to Delhi and other cities.

Minimum Fitness Required

This trek goes above 12,000 ft in winter, with a long summit day and possible snow on the upper sections. To enjoy it rather than just get through it, you need a consistent fitness routine leading up to the trek, one that includes:

  • Aerobic training: walking, running, cycling or stair climbing

  • Strength training: legs and core in particular

  • Mobility work: ankles, knees and hips

Never trekked before? Talk to us. We’ll help you build a training structure that gets you ready.

Our expectations from participants

  • Be open to not knowing and to being without your phone for five days
  • Carry your own daypack, ideally under 7 kg
  • Bring proper layers and shoes as per the winter checklist
  • Tell us about any medical conditions before you sign up
  • Respect the outdoors and follow Leave No Trace principles

Why a surprise?

Because most of us never really see a place for the first time anymore. We’ve seen the photos, read the reviews and watched the reels before we arrive. The surprise gives that back. You’ll walk into this trek with no expectations and see it the way it actually is. It also means letting go of planning and control for five days, which, for most people, is the most restful thing they’ve done all year.

Why won’t you tell me the name, even if I ask?

Because the moment you know the name, you’ll search for it. And the moment you search for it, the photos become your first look, not the mountain. We’d rather you saw it with your own eyes. The same goes for every participant, so no one gets an early peek.

When will I find out where we’re going?

On the evening of Day 1, once we reach the base village. You’ll find out together, as a team.

What if I’ve already done this trek?

When you book, we’ll ask which treks you’ve done before. If you’ve already done this one, we’ll tell you privately and offer you a full transfer to another trek or a refund. No one ends up on a “surprise” they’ve already seen.

How do I prepare if I don’t know where I’m going?

We’ll tell you everything that matters for preparation: the difficulty, the maximum altitude, how long each day is, how cold it gets and exactly what to pack. You’ll be as prepared as you would be on any other trek. The only thing you won’t know is the name.

Will my family know where I am?

Yes. Your emergency contact receives the full route, itinerary and our emergency numbers directly from us before the trek. You won’t see it, but they will, so they always know where you are and how to reach us.

Why no phones?

Because a phone in your pocket keeps you half somewhere else. Five days without notifications, without checking, without documenting every moment is rare, and it changes how you experience the mountains, the people around you, and yourself. Most people find the first day strange and the rest of the trek unforgettable.

What happens to my phone?

On the morning of Day 2, you switch off your phones and hand them to your trek leader, who keeps them safe for the rest of the trek. You get them back when you return to the base village on Day 5.

What if there’s an emergency?

Your leader carries a communication device and our emergency protocols are in place throughout. Your family can reach us through the emergency numbers we share with them. Giving up your phone never means giving up safety.

Can I take photos?

You’re welcome to bring a standalone camera. Our team also photographs the trek and shares the pictures with everyone afterwards, so you can stay present without missing the memories.

How difficult is it?

It’s a moderate winter trek that goes above 12,000 ft and includes one long summit day. If you follow a consistent fitness routine, it’s well within reach, even for first-timers.

How cold does it get, and will there be snow?

Nights can drop to -5°C to -8°C. Our sleeping bags and tents are rated to -10°C. Snow is likely on the higher sections, and we provide microspikes and gaiters.

Are there toilets at the campsites?

Yes. Every campsite has dry toilet tents.

What are the sharing arrangements?

Tents are twin-sharing, with similar arrangements at the homestay. We plan the sharing around the group’s gender ratio.

What happens if someone can’t continue?

We always keep enough support staff to get anyone back safely. As a rule, we trek with one guide for every three participants.

How do I reach Dehradun?

Dehradun has direct flights from most major cities. Alternatively, fly into Delhi and take a bus, cab or train. We’ll share the exact pickup point and time before the trek.
